On journaling, a new line work art style, and moving away from social media

Rare Bird Co. Studio Newsletter #2

Happy February, here’s some recent posts from the Rare Bird Co. Journal + some interesting links around the web.

Starting a journal and ideas for what to write in it

(My beautiful new olive green notebook, isn't she pretty)

A few weeks ago, I came into my daughter's room and was pleasantly surprised to find her journaling.

About a year ago, we had started journaling together. We both had gotten new notebooks for Christmas and we were on vacation with plenty of time to kill. We enjoyed doing a few journal entries together, but the hobby fizzled out like things sometimes do.

Which is why I was surprised to see her journaling again. Apparently, she had gotten interested in it again after she had watched some videos on YouTube and became inspired to try some different styles of journaling.

I wholeheartedly support this hobby, I think it's so life enriching and useful and happen to have been interested in starting up again myself. So I quickly jumped on the train and said let's do it, let's get back into journaling.

Types of journaling discussed in this post:

  • morning pages

  • digital journal in the notes app

  • junk journaling

  • bullet journaling

  • art journaling

  • online journaling…

My weekly art practice round up, a new line art style

It's one of my goals this year to make my art practice front and center in my work days. I can get caught up in all the other aspects of running a creative business (ie. administrative task, packing and shipping, social media, research, etc) that I leave little room for the actual creative part.

As I’ve been slowly moving away from social media, I’ll plan to post weekly to monthly round ups of art that I’ve been working on lately here in the journal.

New line art style drawing

In the past few weeks I've been interested in making art using more of a line art type style. Usually, I do more shape based art. I do sometimes use line work, but it's more so on the inside of the shapes to show the details and it's usually pretty minimal. I really love shape based art as I’ve always been a fan of that bold graphic design look.

Lately though, I've just been interested in more of a line work comic drawing style. I've kind of just been interested in actual drawing and sketching more in general…

Why I'm starting an online journal/ blog on my artist website

Currently, I am working on posting more to the journal/ blog section of our website. I am calling this my online journal.

The problem with social media for artists

Lately, there's been a lot of talk about social media and Instagram and sharing online. Is it dead and what are we going to do next? Where are we going to go next as artists and creative businesses that share online? Carson Ellis wrote a lovely comic about it here. Kristen Drozdowski quit instagram last year and wrote about her experience since quitting here. Some interesting food for thought.

Coinciding with these social media issues, I've also developed more of interest in writing and journaling. I like to share as an artist, but I don't feel like I've been able to share adequately on the social media channels that I've been sharing from…

Interesting bits around the web

  • #Hourlycomicsday was this week and these illustrators, Carson Ellis and Phoebe Wahl, published theirs on their newsletters. How amazing to get such beautiful, creative work right to our email.

  • This podcast from Tom Froese was an eye opening look (or ear opening listen, I should say) on how illustrators are earning a living nowadays.

  • I found this artist and writer, Kelcey Ervick, and her work in graphic literature (pairing text with art, ie. comics, visual poetry, etc) has spurred so many creative ideas in me on the art form. Learn more about it in this podcast interview.

  • Junk journaling is trending and this artist is making me rethink sharing online - maybe we can just let it be one big public art diary. That actually sounds like fun.

As always, thanks for being here,
